5 on Friday: Gwen Beloti
Ever wonder why a designer chose those certain colors? Or what makes them tick? I do. And that’s what 5 on Friday is all about — learning more about designers (and hopefully discovering some fabulous new ones in the process). This week’s designer is Gwen Beloti.
Gwen Beloti is a New York-based women’s wear designer. Her bold, feminine Gwen Beloti Collection is filled with beautiful shapes and fabulous structure, classic but trendy too. Check out her collections here.
Ms. Beloti was kind enough to answer five questions for Sassy Closet … here’s what she had to say:
1. When did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Gwen Beloti: Though I’ve always had a love for fashion, being a fashion designer never crossed my mind. It wasn’t until 2007 that I started creating my own clothes, completely self taught. Initially the pieces weren’t super well made, but I was definitely on to something, so I decided to go back to school for design to perfect my craft. Not too longer after the Gwen Beloti Collection was born.
2. What goes into selecting colors and fabrics for your designs?
GB: I typically base my color pallet off of my mood and off of the designs. I try to determine what colors would best compliment my prototypes. I also periodically check in on the latest color trends.
3. What inspires you?
GB: I am inspired by femininity and possibility. The female figure is so beautiful and we can be so creative with our wardrobe. I pride myself on making fit, style, and quality a priority in all of designs. I am inspired by the limitless attribute of fashion. Fashion to me equals free creative expression and I’m inspired by freedom.
4. What’s one new trend for 2011 that everyone should know about?
GB: Color blocks and structured silhouettes.
5. What’s your one must-have accessory these days?
GB: I am an accessory crazy person, between my large cocktail rings and handbags, I’m going to have to go with the super sized handbag, a lil sequin is always nice too.
Thanks to Gwen Beloti!
